Let’s Cup Rwanda!

Published 22 February 2022

We love tasting coffees from our roasting community and one of our favourite ways to do that is through our regular Let’s Cup events. Get excited because it’s time to celebrate Rwanda!

We’re inviting roasters who have purchased Rwandan coffees through Melbourne Coffee Merchants to send us their roasts of the coffees, which we’ll cup and consider as a team. Participating roasters will receive samples of all of the submitted coffees to taste and compare at their own convenience.

Rwanda is a coffee origin that is extremely close to our hearts. We have been purchasing here since the very early days of MCM, and we cherish the relationships we have established with our supply partners and the producing communities whose coffees we buy. Each year, we are blown away with the dedication to quality that is demonstrated by every person involved in the growing, processing, preparation and selection of our coffee line up.

The result of this hard work and focus are coffees that are intensely sweet and transparent, with distinct regional characteristics. Southern Province lots tend to present syrupy sweetness, red fruit and black tea in the cup; coffees from the Northern Province have more tropical fruit and floral characteristics; and those from the Western Province are crisp and juicy, with vibrant stone fruit and green grape acidity.

This year’s selection featured coffees from our long-time supply partners; Dukunde KawaMaraba and Koakaka
cooperatives and Buf Coffee, along with coffee from a newer supply partner, Tropic Coffee Ltd. Despite Covid-related challenges (read more here), the 2021 crop was exceptional and quality was high across the board.

We are so excited to taste these coffees from our roasting customers, and to celebrate the hard work and skill of our producing partners during this year’s Let’s Cup Rwanda!

If you are currently roasting a Rwandan coffee sourced via Melbourne Coffee Merchants, we would love for you to participate by sending 500g of roasted coffeeby close of business MONDAY 7th MARCH.

Please note our (newish) office address:

Melbourne Coffee Merchants
126 Weston Street
Brunswick, Victoria, 3057

In return, we will send you the samples of each of the submitted coffees for you to taste and share cupping feedback and context for the coffees.

In respect of the health and safety of our team and customers, we will not be holding a public cupping event for this year’s Let’s Cup Rwanda. However, we will be sharing stories and videos of our cupping via Instagram and everyone is invited to tune in! Join us as we cup the coffees and share our thoughts and tasting notes:
