As part of our deep belief in, and commitment to, responsible and sustainable business practices, we are proud and excited to announce that Melbourne Coffee Merchants is now a certified B Corporation.
Why B Corp?
Certified B Corporations are purpose-driven companies that use their business platform to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. These businesses meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
The B Corp accreditation process is objective, rigorous and holistic. Companies must demonstrate excellence in five key areas of impact: governance, workers, customers, community and the environment.
In joining the B Corp certified family, MCM is part of a global network of B Corps that are committed to balancing purpose with profit, and working to transform the global economy into one that benefits all people, communities and the planet.
Our B Corp journey
From the outset, Melbourne Coffee Merchants was founded on the conviction that all parties along the coffee supply chain can, and should, prosper, starting with the individuals and communities that produce the coffee. Since we established our business in 2008, our goal has been to build a market in Australia for high quality coffees that are sourced through transparent, sustainable and values-led practices. Through our work, we aspire to be a positive influence within our coffee communities, and to exemplify and be an active part of the change we believe is necessary for the industry to evolve and thrive.
Becoming a B Corp has always been a long-term goal for MCM. As an independently owned and run business, we have had the freedom to base our decisions on our values and principles, often choosing the path of action that simply feels right. Achieving this certification enables us to affirm our practices beyond what feels right, and to investigate, identify and prioritise where we can do better. It also provides us with a framework to keep ourselves accountable, measure our progress and mindfully grow.
For MCM, becoming a B Corp is not about getting a stamp of approval or signalling our virtue. The rigorous certification process holds us accountable to our own high goals and standards, and enables us to benchmark ourselves against the very best and most sustainably operated businesses around the world. It reinforces our commitment to acting thoughtfully and responsibly across every aspect of our operations – and has ultimately led to the growth and evolution of our business and our team. While of course our journey doesn’t end here, it’s a crucial step in using our business as a force for good.
