Thank you for another great year!

As 2025 draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to pause, reflect and say thank you.⁠

Each year brings its own unique blend of  lessons, opportunities, challenges, inspiration, and connection, and this year was no exception. The last twelve months were defined, in many ways, by volatility – most notably in the C market, which moved with incredible speed and unpredictability – that challenged us all; producers, exporters and buyers, and everyone in between. The instability created real pressure on planning and margins, and it forced difficult conversations around pricing, contracting and risk. ⁠

But it also reminded us why we do things the way we do.⁠

Through these unprecedented times, it was the strength of our relationships both locally and internationally that constantly grounded us. We navigated the uncertainty together, with a shared sense of purpose, mutual care and openness. This year underscored, more than ever, that our work is not defined by contracts or transactions; it’s defined by the people and communities we work with. This is what gets us out of bed every morning, and what gives us stability, reassurance and resilience. 

Across all of the origins that we buy coffee in, we saw producers make extraordinary efforts to maintain quality and invest in their farms and communities, despite rising costs, labour shortages, climate unpredictability and shifting market incentives. Time and time again, we were humbled by the dedication of the individuals, families and cooperatives we work with, by their trust and commitment to MCM, and by how much value they place on their coffees being shared and celebrated by the roasting community here in Australia, Thailand and Singapore.

More than anything, 2025 has reminded us of the importance and value of the trusting partnerships we are so fortunate to have with our suppliers and our customers; we don’t take these relationships for granted.

On our side, we doubled down on communication with our customers and producing partners. We worked hard to be the kind of supplier and buyer who shows up even when things are complex – sharing more information, listening closely, and working collaboratively to navigate uncertainty. We spent more time at origin; cupping, walking through coffee farms, having meals together, and, importantly, learning through dialogue. Back at home, we tried to contextualise this information for our customers, so they could understand the situation more deeply and make more informed decisions. All of these conversations – the frank ones, the hopeful ones, the strategic ones – anchored us in what matters most. 

Our business has never been transactional; it’s never been about playing the game, getting a quick win, or chasing the highs or lows. We are here to champion quality, to honour the labour, expertise and excellence of our producing partners, and to connect our roasting community at home with fantastic coffees that deserve to be seen and valued. At its heart, Melbourne Coffee Merchants is about relationships that have a shared sense of purpose, trust and commitment. This is what has carried us through 2025, and it’s what brings us energy and optimism heading into the new year.
