More Ethiopian Coffees Have Just Landed!

Published 5 Sep 2023

Our second and final container of Ethiopian coffee  has landed! We’ve been eagerly awaiting this shipment’s arrival, as it includes some of our favourite lots from longtime supply partner Testi Specialty Coffee, along with two single producer lots from the famed Kochere woreda.

After a few delays in transit, we’re so excited to begin dispatching these lots to our roasting community! Check out our offer list for the full selection, and read on to learn more about these exceptional coffees…

Jigesa Washed | Shakisso, Guji

Established in 2014, Jigesa is one of twenty washing stations owned by longtime supply partner Testi Specialty Coffee — and responsible for one of the most distinct washed coffees we source! Using cherry from around 500 independent outgrowers from the nearby kebele of Dambi Uddo, Jigesa’s team processes lots using fresh, clean water from the Mormora and Bishan Dimo rivers. The acidity of their offerings always stands out on the cupping table, and this year’s lot is no different. This sugary sweet coffee is elegant and complex, and has honeydew melon, green apple and lingering lemon blossom florals in the cup.

Werka Natural Organic | Nensebo, West Arsi

There’s so much to love about clean and winey natural coffees: from their floral aromatics, to their flavours of red and purple fruits (think strawberry, cherry and grape!). Werka Natural has all of these attributes in spades, along with a beautiful chocolate mousse texture that makes it an incredibly versatile offering. Grown by farmers from the kebele of Werka, in the up and coming region of West Arsi, and processed at Testi’s Gara Kone washing station, this standout coffee is a crowd favourite that excels across all roast styles and applications, and we’re thrilled to be offering it for another year!

Addisu Hulichaye Natural | Kochere, Gedeo

Being able to purchase a lot from a single producer in Ethiopia is rare and incredibly special — doing it for three years in a row is an absolute privilege! We are connected to Addisu and his coffee through the Lalisaa Project, an initiative from Sucafina Ethiopia that aims to improve the quantity and quality of coffee produced by partnered producers whose lots are big enough to be milled and prepared for export on their own. We’ve always loved Addisu’s coffee and are thrilled with this year’s crop, as it has tropical acidity, white chocolate sweetness, and notes of finger lime, green grape and honeysuckle.

Wako Aba Natural | Kochere, Gedeo

A former bee keeper turned coffee producer, Wako Aba grows and processes exceptional naturally-processed lots at his farm Banko Busa. The property is found at a staggering 2,200m above sea level, and is intercropped with other cash crops like banana, legumes and various grains. Similar to Addisuu, we have access to Wako’s coffee through the Lalisaa Project. Prior to enrolling in the program, Wako grew coffee and sold cherry to local brokers and washing stations for some fifteen years, and has used the knowledge gained during this time to produce a bright and well-structured offering, with apricot, yellow peach and cherry.
